Marsh Water Project
Marsh Ditch is a private drainage system west of the City of Glencoe. It provides drainage for more than 6 square miles of agricultural and urban lands before outletting into Buffalo Creek (an impaired water). Because the drainage system is not publicly maintained, it has degraded into a state of disrepair, resulting in flooding and a decreased drainage function. A lack of storage along the system combined with increased pollutant concentrations in the contributing runoff has led to increasing pollutant discharges to Buffalo Creek. The City of Glencoe petitioned for a repair project to correct these issues.
The Buffalo Creek Watershed District (BCWD) contracted Houston Engineering, Inc. (HEI) to complete a study of alternatives for the repair of Marsh Ditch and construction of best management practices (BMPs) along this private drainage system to promote improved water quality. Final plans included a large stormwater wetland, culvert replacement, ditch maintenance, buffer establishment, and stormsewer repairs. Construction began in May of 2017 and is expected to be completed in the summer of 2018.
